Covid-19 has presented new challenges to our practice. In Relational-Cultural therapy, relationship is the healing agent, and it has become harder to nurture authenticity and vulnerability without being able to meet face to face safely. (Our building does not currently have the type of filtration system that would support meeting face to face.)
We offer telehealth services using Simple Practice, which offers a virtual office as well as all of our practice paperwork and payment options. For most people, this works well; we can connect similarly to how we connect in the therapy room. For some others, telehealth is harder. People who are in virtual meetings all day may be exhausted from screens and even though they want to connect, turning on another screen feels awful. A phone consultation is one option. Our newest option is walking or exploring outdoors!
Outdoor therapy offers an opportunity to connect with each other and nature while we work. You can set the pace, and choose from several locations. The goal is to get our bodies moving a little bit in nature, not to work up a sweat. Research has suggested that walking in nature reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, and supports improved cognitive functioning.
Outdoor therapy, connecting to each other and to our planet, dovetails with Relational-Cultural therapy– allowing us to connect more deeply in our work.
People interested in outdoor therapy should sign up for a telehealth assessment before any walks/outings– we’re just not quite coordinated enough to write down essential information and walk at the same time! Once you’ve completed an assessment appointment, we can start exploring outdoors together
