K. E. Thaxton (Thax)

They/them

Thax is an associate therapist with the BCC.

I provide individual therapeutic services for adults & older teenagers as well as occasional group therapy programs. I hold a Master’s degree in mental health counseling and counselor education from Indiana University and am licensed as a mental health counselor associate (LMHCA) in the state of Indiana. I specialize in serving the LGBTQ+ community with a particular passion for working with other trans people. I have worked with clients of many different backgrounds, identities, & cultural standpoints.

My approach to therapy is client-centered, trauma-informed, and neurodivergence affirming.

I tend to use the following modalities: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Relational Cultural Theory (RCT), attachment and polyvagal theories. For some, having a space to process through your suffering can be aided by a politicized lens; I also draw upon abolitionist/feminist therapies to bring in consideration of systemic oppression, power dynamics, and liberation psychology.

I often work with people who might be struggling with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, existential concerns, exploring sexual/gender identity (also polyamory and kink affirming), wanting support while transitioning, learning how to live with ADHD/autism, creating safety and healing from abuse/trauma. I strive to remain curious about who you are by not making assumptions, paying attention to the influence of the contexts & environments you’re inhabiting, and deeply listening to what you’re sharing with humility, empathy, and respect. I’m happy to provide letters of support for people’s medical transitions (e.g. HRT, top/bottom surgery…).

Sometimes lived experience and personality can be important in terms of finding someone you feel comfortable working with, so to share a little more about who I am as a person: I am queer & non binary/gender-fluid (pronouns: they-them-theirs), neurodivergent, spoonie/has invisible disability, in my early 30’s, and a survivor of abuse. My favorite color is purple and I have a very fluffy cat. I love making art and all sorts of crafting, singing, watching tv (especially animated shows), reading graphic novels, playing games with friends, and spending time in the woods. One main focus of my academic research was understanding how dehumanization factors into cultural notions of (in)sanity.

I do this work because I believe that the therapeutic relationship can be a powerful tool for learning, growth, and healing. I see therapy as a tool for personal transformation & empowerment accomplished through skill building, increasing awareness, and affirmation of needs, feelings, and desires. I do this work in hopes that this will contribute to a future where we can better depend on ourselves and each other. Being able to offer these services, particularly to other queer and trans people brings me joy and a sense of purpose.
